HOW TO…
Replace My Stove Grate.
Replacing the grate in your wood or multi-fuel stove is usually a quick and straightforward job—but it’s important to do it properly to avoid damaging other internal components like the firebricks or ash pan.
Important: Please Read Before Continuing
Before You Begin
- Make sure the stove is completely cool.
- Use safety gloves to avoid injury where possible.
- Use a dust mask if you're sensitive to ash or fine debris.
- Have your grate or grate bars ready.
Important Tips
Be aware of the order to re-install the fire brick back into the stove!!!
What You’ll Need:
- Replacement stove grate (specific to your stove make and model)
- Gloves (to protect your hands from soot, rust, or sharp edges)
- Small brush or vacuum (for cleaning inside the firebox)
- Optional: Screwdriver or wrench (if your grate is held by brackets or bolts)
Step-by-Step Instructions
-
Let the Stove Cool Completely
- Make sure the stove is completely cold before working inside it.
- Never attempt to handle internal parts while the stove is hot.
-
Open the Stove Door and Remove Ash
- Open the main stove door fully.
- Empty any ash from the grate and surrounding area using a small shovel or vacuum.
- If your stove has a removable ash pan, take that out first.
-
Remove the Old Grate
Most grates are lift-out designs, especially in wood-burning stoves. Grip the grate with both hands and lift it out gently, tilting it if necessary to clear the edges.
If your grate is part of a multi-fuel riddling system, check for:
- A riddling bar or handle attached to it.
- Any retaining clips or brackets holding it in place.
- Unhook or unscrew these as needed.
-
Clean the Firebox
- While the grate is out, take the chance to brush away ash or debris from the base of the firebox.
- Check for cracks in firebricks or damage around the grate supports.
-
Install the New Grate
Carefully lower the new grate into place, aligning it with:
- Support ledges, tabs, or brackets on the stove base.
- Any riddling bar or mechanism, if your stove has one.
Make sure it sits flush and doesn't rock or shift.
-
Reassemble the Stove
Replace the ash pan and any firebricks or internal parts you removed. Close the stove door and make sure everything feels stable and properly aligned.
Pro Tips:
- Always use a genuine or compatible grate designed for your stove model. Using the wrong type may cause damage or reduce efficiency.
- Don’t operate the stove with a cracked or broken grate—this can damage the base and firebricks.
- If your stove has a riddling system, test the new grate by moving the handle to ensure smooth motion.
