What Is a DEFRA Stove?
Approved for use in Smoke Control Areas across the UK
A DEFRA stove is a wood-burning or multi-fuel stove that has been approved by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) for use in Smoke Control Areas—urban or built-up locations where burning wood or other solid fuels is otherwise restricted.
Why Does This Matter?
Over 80% of UK homes are located in Smoke Control Areas. In these zones, you cannot legally burn wood in a regular stove or open fire unless it’s a DEFRA-approved appliance.
What Makes a Stove DEFRA-Approved?
DEFRA-approved stoves are designed to:
- Burn wood more cleanly and completely
- Produce very low levels of smoke and particulates
- Prevent users from “slowing the burn” too much (which creates excess smoke)
- Comply with strict Clean Air Act regulations
Look for the phrase “DEFRA Exempt” or “DEFRA-Approved” in the stove specifications.
DEFRA + Eco Design = The Perfect Combo
Many modern stoves are now both:
- DEFRA-Approved (legal in urban areas)
- Eco Design-Ready (meets 2022 clean air standards)
This ensures:
- Maximum efficiency
- Minimum emissions
- Full legal compliance now and in the future
